To
comprehend what gender role stereotypes are, one has to first recognize what
the concepts of gender roles are. Gender roles are behaviours, activities,
tasks and responsibilities that males or females play in a specified society,
they are ultimately the building blocks for gender role stereotype. From “Women
are better cooks” to “Men are natural leaders” all negative gender role
stereotypes. Gender role stereotypes are oversimplified and generalized
attributes or roles that are performed by or the activities appropriate to
either male or female as stipulated by society. These stereotypes limit women’s
and men’s capabilities to enhance their abilities or even pursue their
proficient careers. Gender stereotypes are nurtured and conveyed simultaneously
as suggested by the social learning theory they develop through observational
learning, imitating, modelling and are conveyed through agents or forces of
socialization (Family, Mass media, School, Language, Religion ).
